Becoming more self-aware
Throughout a child’s school years, their friends become increasingly important. Children mirror themselves in others, in order to develop their own identity. Some children become conscious of their hearing loss and may feel embarrassed by their hearing aids. As they get older, there is a risk that your child will downplay their need for hearing aids because they don’t want to draw attention to themselves.
TIP: Remaining aware of such challenges can help you spot when they need support and reassurance.
New challenges
For all children, school is a place that requires a lot of effort as they try to hear, understand, and act on what is said in the classroom, playground, canteen, and after-school programme.
Modern schools require that children are able to multi-task. They need to use computers, understand and respond to what the teacher says, and participate in group work. They are also introduced to sports and other extracurricular activities.
TIP: Children learn and progress differently over time and the needs of your child must be assessed continuously.
